Who brews?

Terry Sydes - Tuesday, August 04, 2009
What sort of person decides to dabble in the dark arks? What sort of person brews their own beer?
No, it’s not the domain of friendless geeks without girlfriends. The answer is simple….anyone who likes both beer and being at home. If you can tick both those boxes it’s time to give beer brewing a shot. Home brewing, as we know it today, has been fast growing in popularity since the late 1970’s. And because you can brew ale, lager, stout, even organic beers and more, there’s bound to be a beer to suit just about anyone no matter how much of a total snob you are (just kidding). Plus, beer and food matching is the new black and gives the whole thing a bit of class.
And here’s something the large commercial brewers don’t want you to know….beer brewing is easy and the real beauty of it is you’re not restricted by flavour. Once you get the hang of the basics you can start to experiment with different flavours and produce a beer that tastes like just about anything. You’ve probably heard of chili beer, well what about pineapple or even coffee flavoured beer? Sure these ideas might sound like the mad rantings of a beer brewing fanatic but, regardless of whether those two flavours float your boat, they’ve been done, thereby proving the possibilities are limited only by your imagination: elephant flavoured beer is probably not an option however.
So, if you’re yet to dabble in the dark/pale/bitter arts why not try your luck with a beer brewing kit. They’re the best place for a newbie to start and, you guessed it, we sell em!

Well here is one that I'm sure you would never have thought you would hear from... A wife's point of view. I gave the old man his keg system a few years ago thinking it would keep him preoccupied for a little while as he doesn't tend to keep his mind on one hobby for very long. How wrong was I, 5 years down the track he is still experimenting with his brewing setup. Not being a drinker he had to bring in his mates to tell him what they thought of the different brews. Now I'm not sure if he ever wanted the elephant tasting one (kidding)but there have been quite a few different ones that have passed through this place, without any complaints from the partakers and quite a few have invested in their own systems. He doesn't go down the club that much any more but I'm thinking of putting a few pokies in and starting up a club of our own (kidding again) as he has set his tab up down the back as well. Anyone who thinks they want to see more of their hubbies get them a system for Dad's Day, Birthday or even Christmas coz if you do I can tell you that they prefer it when they do it themselves but expect a few more visitors (usually male) and get out the phone book for your local pizza place. It is well worth the experience if not the savings of the cost of taxis home from the club coz they have missed the last bus.
